Writing at Prenton

Our Commitment to Writing
At Prenton High School for Girls, we believe that high-quality writing is fundamental to learning,
achievement and future success. Writing enables students to organise their thinking, deepen
understanding and communicate ideas clearly across all subjects.
We recognise that writing can be challenging for many students, particularly when writing at length.
Our whole-school writing strategy ensures that students are explicitly taught how to write well,
rather than being expected to pick this up independently.

Why Writing Matters
- Supports success in internal and external examinations
- Improves understanding, retention and recall of knowledge
- Builds confidence, independence and resilience
- Prepares students for further education, employment and life beyond school
Our Whole-School Writing Strategy
All subjects contribute to developing confident, capable writers. While writing looks different across
subjects, students experience consistent approaches and shared expectations throughout the
school.
Key Focus Areas
- Vocabulary – subject-specific and academic language is taught explicitly.
- Sentences & Structure – students learn how to construct clear sentences and paragraphs.
- Accuracy (SPaG) – spelling, punctuation and grammar are taught and reinforced.
- Planning & Redrafting – writing is treated as a process, not a one-off task.
- Writing Stamina – students are supported to write for longer periods over time.
How Writing Is Taught
Teachers use evidence-informed strategies including modelling, structured talk, combining reading
with writing, and opportunities to practise and improve written work.
Writing Across Subjects
Teachers explicitly teach subject-specific writing conventions and expectations, ensuring students
can transfer writing skills confidently across the curriculum.
Our Aim for Students
By the time students leave Prenton High School for Girls, we want them to write confidently,
accurately and at length, using writing as a powerful tool for learning and communication
