Student Leadership at Prenton
Empowering Students to Make a Difference
At Prenton High School, we believe that every student has the potential to lead.
Leadership is not simply about holding a title or speaking confidently in front of others. It is about taking responsibility, listening to different perspectives, supporting others and having the confidence to make a positive difference.
Through our Student Life & Leadership programme, students develop essential skills, represent their peers and contribute to the decisions, activities and initiatives that shape school life.
Guided by our ethos of Belong. Be Heard. Lead., we provide inclusive leadership opportunities that recognise different strengths, interests and abilities.
Our ambition is to develop confident, responsible and compassionate young people who are proud to contribute to #TeamPrenton.
SSLT
Leadership and Beyond
Looking Ahead
Our Senior Student Leadership Team (SSLT)
Our Student Senior Leadership Team (SSLT) plays an important role in representing students, supporting school improvement and leading initiatives across our school community.
For 2026/27, our SSLT comprises 37 Year 10 students who work collaboratively to lead projects, promote student voice and support our wider student leadership groups. The team includes our Head Student, Deputy Head Student and students with responsibilities across key areas of Student Life & Leadership.
Working alongside staff and student representatives from Years 7–11, the SSLT helps ensure that students have opportunities to influence decisions, organise activities and contribute positively to school life. Our SSLT members act as role models, demonstrating our school values of Trust, Respect, Integrity, Kindness and Endeavour (TRIKE) through their actions and responsibilities.
Inclusive Leadership: Recognising Every Strength
We recognise that students demonstrate leadership in different ways. Some are confident public speakers, while others excel through organisation, creativity, teamwork, empathy, practical problem-solving or supporting those around them.
Our SSLT recruitment process is designed to recognise this diversity of strengths and provide an inclusive route into leadership. Students complete an application before participating in team-based leadership activities and group interviews. These activities provide opportunities to demonstrate communication, collaboration, initiative and responsibility within a supportive environment. Appropriate adaptations and support enable students with different needs and strengths to demonstrate their potential.
Representation Within Our 2026/27 SSLT
Our 37 student leaders represent a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
- 32.4% of SSLT members have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
- 48.6% are eligible for free school meals.
- 27% have English as an additional language (EAL).
These figures reflect the composition of our SSLT and demonstrate the range of experiences represented within the team.
We believe that leadership opportunities should be accessible to students with different strengths, experiences and starting points, helping ensure that student leadership reflects the diversity of our school community.
Developing Leadership Skills
Students selected for the SSLT take part in leadership development and receive ongoing support as they undertake their responsibilities. Leadership development focuses on:
- Communication and teamwork – listening to others, sharing ideas and working collaboratively.
- Organisation and event planning – preparing activities, managing responsibilities and working towards shared goals.
- Student voice and consultation – representing peers, gathering feedback and communicating ideas.
- School representation – acting as positive ambassadors for Prenton.
- Transition and mentoring – welcoming, encouraging and supporting younger students.
- Community engagement – contributing to volunteering, fundraising and projects beyond school.
- Reflection and personal development – recognising achievements, evaluating experiences and identifying skills for future success.
Through practical leadership experiences, students develop our LORIC skills: Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication.
Students are encouraged to reflect on their responsibilities and record relevant experiences through Unifrog, helping them recognise their personal development and prepare for future education, training and employment.
Our Student Leadership Teams
Our SSLT helps lead and support a wider network of student leadership groups, providing opportunities for students across Years 7–11 to contribute to school life.
Prenton Parliamentarians & Form Leaders
Representing student views and contributing to school improvement. Form Leaders gather feedback from their form groups, share ideas and help ensure that students have a voice in decisions affecting school life. Prenton Parliamentarians work collaboratively to discuss priorities, develop proposals and contribute to student-led projects and initiatives. Our ‘You say, we do!’ approach ensures that student consultation can lead to meaningful action.
Team Thrive & Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
Promoting wellbeing, positive relationships, kindness and belonging. Team Thrive supports initiatives linked to mental health, friendships, anti-bullying and student wellbeing. Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors contribute to awareness activities and encourage a supportive school culture where students feel safe, respected and included.
Green Team
Championing sustainability, environmental responsibility and community action. Green Team members contribute to projects involving biodiversity, litter reduction, environmental awareness and partnerships with local organisations. Their work includes collaborative environmental activities with Bedford Drive Primary School, helping students develop leadership skills while making a positive difference in the local community.
Faith & Culture Champions
Celebrating diversity, promoting understanding and strengthening connections across our school community. Faith and Culture Champions help develop cultural activities, awareness events and opportunities for students to share and celebrate different traditions and experiences. Their work has included organising the Global Snack Shack for European Day of Languages, developing practical skills in enterprise, customer service and event organisation.
Student Life Leaders
Encouraging students to participate in clubs, enrichment, house activities and wider school opportunities. Student Life Leaders help promote activities, support student-led events and encourage their peers to become more involved in school life. Their role contributes to our ambition for every student to discover interests, develop confidence and experience a strong sense of belonging.
Leadership in Action
Student leadership at Prenton is designed to provide meaningful opportunities for students to put their ideas into practice. Our leadership groups meet fortnightly during Week 2 of the school timetable, supported and led by members of our SSLT. Meetings provide opportunities for students to:
- Represent the views and experiences of their peers.
- Discuss school priorities and suggest improvements.
- Plan student-led activities, campaigns and events.
- Organise fundraising and community projects.
- Review feedback and evaluate progress.
- Develop teamwork, organisation and communication skills.
Student leadership is closely connected to our wider Student Life programme, helping students shape clubs, house competitions, enrichment activities and community initiatives.
From Student Voice to Student Action
Recent examples of student leadership include:
House Activities
Form Leaders supported student voting on new house logos and helped shape the Autumn Through My Eyes photography competition.
Environmental Action
Green Team members worked with Bedford Drive Primary School on a litter pick and biodiversity study.
Cultural Celebration
Faith and Culture Champions organised and delivered the Global Snack Shack for European Day of Languages.
Community Support
Prenton Parliamentarians helped develop the Food Bank Donation Station and the student-led Fill a Bag initiative.
Wellbeing and Belonging
Team Thrive and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors have contributed to planning activities that promote positive mental health, friendships and an inclusive school culture.
These experiences enable students to develop leadership skills through practical action, collaboration and responsibility.
#TeamPrentonTogether: Leading Through Community Action
Our student-led fundraising and community initiative, #TeamPrentonTogether, brings our leadership teams together around a shared commitment to making a positive difference. The name and fundraising priorities were selected through student voice. Our fundraising supports three shared priorities:
- Student-led school improvement projects.
- The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, selected by students for 2026/27.
- Support towards the Year 11 Prom.
Our student leadership teams are working towards delivering activities across three areas:
Community Volunteering – contributing to projects that support local people, organisations and communities.
Fundraising – organising activities that contribute towards our shared priorities.
Awareness and Advocacy – promoting understanding of important issues linked to each team’s responsibilities.
This provides opportunities for students to develop empathy, initiative, organisation and responsibility while understanding the impact they can have on others.
Leadership Opportunities Beyond the SSLT
We believe that leadership should not be limited to students holding formal SSLT positions.
Across Prenton, students have opportunities to demonstrate responsibility, initiative and teamwork through a wide range of roles and activities.
These include:
- Form Leaders and Prenton Parliamentarians
- Sports Leaders
- Reading Ambassadors
- Transition Leaders
- Aspire+ leadership opportunities
- Clubs and extracurricular activities
- House competitions and school events
- Community volunteering and charity projects
- Enrichment and enterprise experiences
These varied opportunities allow students to develop leadership through practical action, creativity, collaboration and supporting others. We want students to recognise that leadership is something they can develop throughout their time at Prenton, regardless of their starting point.
Looking Ahead
We are committed to continually strengthening our student leadership provision and creating opportunities for more students to contribute.
Our priorities include:
- Expanding inclusive leadership opportunities across Years 7–11.
- Strengthening student voice and demonstrating how feedback influences decisions.
- Developing community partnerships and student-led projects.
- Increasing opportunities for mentoring and transition support.
- Supporting students to plan, deliver and evaluate meaningful initiatives.
- Encouraging students to reflect on and recognise their developing LORIC skills.
- Continuing to build a culture of belonging, participation and shared responsibility.
Through student voice, leadership development and meaningful opportunities for action, we aim to help students develop the confidence, character and skills needed to make a positive difference.
At Prenton High School, we believe that every student has something valuable to contribute and the potential to lead.
Belong. Be Heard. Lead.
