In addition to the core PE lessons that form part of the KS4 curriculum for all students, we also offer a GCSE qualification in PE.
At KS4, the PE curriculum aims to develop students’ knowledge in physiology, anatomy and social cultural aspects in sport. This is achieved through physical fitness activities, which develop specific skills for students’ chosen sporting activities such as football and netball. Physical skills are developed throughout practical PE lessons in curriculum time, extra-curricular activities and competitions. Lessons also improve student’s understanding of performance in sport and develop knowledge on how fitness methods are used to develop ability and skills.
Students will learn about how the human body works in sport through topics such as the cardio-respiratory system and how effectiveness can develop or enhance sporting performance. Students focus on developing their ability in three sports and receive feedback from their teacher and peers using video and photo analysis to enhance their performance. The subject covers a number of topics to help students to understand how to achieve a healthy, active lifestyle through sports performance. These include safe execution of a range of sporting techniques and movements, a theoretical focus on anatomy in sport, diet and nutrition, hydration, warming up and cooling down to prepare and recovering from a training session.
The subject of PE helps to develop many important attributes that will help students throughout their lives including confidence, commitment, concentration and movement memory.
